How to Edit a Scanned PDF Online Free (Including Hindi)
A scanned PDF — or a PDF made from phone photos — is a set of pictures. There is no text inside it, only an image of text, which is why you can't click a word or select a sentence. You can still edit it. Which way to go depends on how much you need to change.
| You need to… | Do this | Tool |
|---|---|---|
| Fix a word, a number or a date | Whiteout + type over it | Edit PDF |
| Add text, a tick, a signature or a stamp | Add on top of the scan | Edit PDF |
| Change many lines or whole paragraphs | Make it editable with OCR | PDF to Word |
| Just search or copy the text | Add a text layer | OCR PDF |
Method 1: Fix a few words directly on the scan
- Open Edit PDF and choose the scanned PDF.
- Pick Whiteout and drag over the word to change. On a white page the box disappears into the paper.
- Pick Text, tap on the box and type the new word. Choose a size close to the original; zoom in to line it up.
- Download as PDF.
Smart Replace can't copy the old words from a scan because there is no text to copy, so you type the replacement yourself. If the paper is grey or yellowish, a white box can show; in that case, a highlight-coloured box or a neat strike-through with the new value next to it often looks more honest anyway.
Fix a scanned page without retyping the whole thing.
Edit the Scan — FreeMethod 2: Make the whole scan editable (OCR)
For bigger changes, turn the scan into text first. PDF to Word detects scanned pages, reads them with OCR (English and Hindi), and gives you an editable .docx with tables, lists and headings where it can. Edit it in Word, then save it back with Word to PDF. It also tells you if the scan is too blurry or faint to read well.
For Hindi scans — including old office orders, letters and notices — see Hindi PDF to Word.
Method 3: Make it searchable
If you only need to find and copy text, OCR PDF adds a hidden text layer to the scan. The page looks the same, but you can search it and select words.
Tips for a scan that edits well
- Scan at 300 DPI, flat and straight. A crooked or curled page confuses OCR.
- Good, even light matters more than an expensive camera for phone photos.
- Always check numbers after OCR — 8 and 3, 1 and 7, 0 and O are the usual mix-ups.
- Keep a copy of the original scan.
Privacy
Editing a scan in Edit PDF happens in your browser — nothing is uploaded. PDF to Word uses our server for OCR; the file is processed and then deleted. If the scan shows ID, bank or phone numbers, hide them first with the "Hide personal numbers before upload" option or our Mask Aadhaar & PAN tool.
Frequently asked questions
Can I edit a scanned PDF online for free?
Yes. For small fixes, cover the words with Whiteout in DocuSmartly Edit PDF and type the new text. For bigger changes, convert the scan to Word with OCR, edit it, and save it back as PDF. Both are free.
Why can't I select text in my scanned PDF?
A scan is an image of a page, so there is no text inside it. OCR (optical character recognition) reads the image and adds real text.
Can I edit a Hindi scanned PDF?
Yes. You can type Hindi on top of the scan in Edit PDF, or convert the scan to editable Hindi in Word with PDF to Word, which reads Hindi with OCR.
How do I make a scanned PDF editable?
Run it through PDF to Word (OCR is automatic for scans) to get an editable Word file, or OCR PDF to make it searchable while keeping the look.
Is my scanned document uploaded?
Not in Edit PDF — it runs in your browser. PDF to Word and OCR need our server; files are deleted after processing.
