How to Convert a Hindi PDF to Word (Kruti Dev, Unicode & Scanned)

October 9, 2026 · 7 min read

You convert a Hindi PDF to Word and get one of three disappointments: English gibberish like "fujh{k.k fVIi.kh", Hindi with broken or doubled matras, or nothing editable at all. The reason is almost never the converter alone. There are three different kinds of Hindi PDF, and each one breaks in its own way. This guide shows you how to tell which kind you have in 30 seconds, and how to get clean, editable Hindi in Word for free.

The 30-second test: which kind of Hindi PDF do you have?

Open the PDF, try to select one Hindi word, copy it and paste it into Notepad (or any notes app):

What you seeKind of PDFWhat it needs
Proper Hindi: निरीक्षण टिप्पणीTyped Unicode HindiA normal conversion, plus a matra clean-up
English gibberish: fujh{k.k fVIi.khOld font, usually Kruti DevKruti Dev to Unicode conversion

1. Typed Unicode Hindi (made in Word or Google Docs)

This is the easy case: the real Hindi letters are inside the file. Converters still trip on two things. Some PDFs store matras twice, so Word shows "छात्रोंों", and wrapped lines get glued together without a space. Word can also clip the top and bottom matras when it copies a tight line height from the PDF. DocuSmartly's PDF to Word fixes all three automatically: it removes doubled matras, restores the missing spaces and gives Hindi lines enough height.

2. Kruti Dev and other old Hindi fonts

Government offices, courts and many schools still type in Kruti Dev. In a Kruti Dev PDF the screen shows Hindi, but the file only stores the keyboard keys that were pressed. That is why a normal converter copies "fujh{k.k" into Word instead of "निरीक्षण".

DocuSmartly recognises Kruti Dev text during conversion and changes it to proper Unicode Hindi, including the tricky parts: the ि matra that is typed before its letter, the reph (र्) typed after its syllable, and half letters. The Word file uses Nirmala UI, a Hindi font that comes with Windows, so the text stays editable and searchable. Other old fonts such as Chanakya are not converted yet; if your file uses one, the text will still come out as gibberish.

3. Scanned Hindi pages and phone photos

A scan has no text inside at all, only a picture, so it needs OCR (optical character recognition). The common mistake is reading a Hindi page with English OCR, which produces nonsense like "samt wraraka". DocuSmartly checks the page first and switches to Hindi OCR automatically when it finds Devanagari. It also straightens tilted and bent pages, and rebuilds ruled tables and numbered lists in Word.

OCR can still misread a blurry photo, and the dangerous mistakes are the ones that look right. In our own test, a WhatsApp-quality photo of a Hindi government order came out with 05.05.2026 read as 05.05.2028. So after converting a scan, the tool shows a short quality report next to the download: 🟢 Good, 🟡 Fair or 🔴 Poor, with the reasons (blurry photo, low resolution, poor light, tilted or bent page, share of words OCR was unsure of) and how to fix them. On a 🔴 Poor result, check every number, date and name against the original.

Have a photo, not a PDF? Turn it into a PDF first with the free Images to PDF tool (it runs in your browser), then convert that PDF to Word. Our photo to Word guide has tips for taking a photo that OCR reads well.

How to convert a Hindi PDF to Word in 4 steps

  1. Open the converter. Go to PDF to Word. It's free and needs no sign-up.
  2. Add your PDF. Typed, Kruti Dev or scanned: you don't have to choose. The tool works out which kind it is.
  3. Convert and download the .docx file.
  4. Check it. Open it in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice. For scans, read the quality box and check numbers, dates and names.

Is it private?

Converting to Word is a heavy job, so it runs on our server, not in your browser. Your PDF is uploaded over HTTPS, converted, and deleted as soon as the Word file is sent back; it is not stored. If a document is very sensitive (an ID card, for example), typing the few lines you need may be the safer choice.

Common questions

Why do I see boxes instead of Hindi in Word? Your computer is missing a Hindi font. On Windows, Nirmala UI is built in; on other systems, pick any Devanagari font such as Noto Sans Devanagari.

Can I edit the result in Google Docs? Yes. The text is standard Unicode Hindi, so it works in Google Docs, Word and LibreOffice, and you can search it.

Does it convert Chanakya or other old fonts? Not yet. Kruti Dev is supported because it is by far the most common.

Is the scanned result perfect? Not always. Clean scans come out well; blurry photos produce mistakes, which is exactly what the quality report warns you about.
