How to Edit Text in a PDF Without Converting to Word
You spot a typo in a PDF — a wrong amount, a misspelt name, last year's date — and the usual advice is "convert it to Word, fix it, convert it back". That works, but the round trip often breaks the layout: fonts change, tables shift, a one-page letter becomes two. If you only need to change a few words, you can edit the text right on the PDF page and keep everything else exactly as it was.
The quick answer
- Open DocuSmartly Edit PDF and choose your PDF.
- Double-click the words you want to change (on a phone, double-tap).
- The line opens in a text box in the same size, colour and place — delete or add letters like in Word.
- Press Download and choose PDF.
Fix the words, keep the layout.
Edit PDF Text — FreeWhy PDF text is hard to change
A PDF doesn't store paragraphs the way Word does. It stores each piece of text at an exact position on the page, often with only the letters that the document uses from each font. That is why typing into the middle of a PDF line is unreliable in any browser editor: there may be no room, and the font may not contain the new letters. Instead of fighting that, DocuSmartly covers the old words and places new text on top, matched to the original size — which looks the same on screen and on paper.
Change existing text: Whiteout + Smart Replace
The quickest way is to double-click the text. The editor reads the PDF's own text layer, covers that line in the page's background colour (white, cream, dark blue — whatever the page has) and opens the same words in a text box at the same position, size and colour, with the cursor where you clicked. You fix the letters and click outside. When you download, the old words are taken out of the file and your corrected words go in their place.
You can also drag Whiteout over just a few words: with Smart Replace on, those words are copied into a text box for you to correct.
- Replace a word: whiteout the word, type the new one.
- Change a number or amount: whiteout just the digits so the rest of the line stays untouched.
- Delete text: double-click the line and delete the words, or whiteout them and leave the box empty — the words are taken out of the downloaded file, not just hidden.
Good to know: your edited pages keep their quality and the file stays about the same size — the page is not turned into a picture. For ID, bank or phone numbers, use Redact instead, which removes everything under the box for good.
Add new text anywhere
Pick Text, tap where the words should go and type. You can change the font (Sans, Serif, Mono and more, including a Hindi Devanagari font), size, colour, bold, italic, underline, alignment and line spacing. Plain English text in the Sans, Serif or Mono fonts downloads as real PDF text, so it stays searchable and selectable.
Change the font size of text
Select a text box you added and pick a new size from the Size list, or drag a corner to scale it. For text that was printed in the original PDF, whiteout it first; Smart Replace brings it back in its original size, and you can then change the size like any other text box.
Replace the same word many times
Use Replace in the toolbar to find and replace across everything you have added — every text box and table cell on every page — with options for match case and whole words. For words printed in the original PDF, use Whiteout on each one.
When converting to Word is still the better choice
If you need to rewrite whole paragraphs, reflow a page or change a long document, a Word file is easier: convert with PDF to Word, make the changes, then use Word to PDF. For a handful of words, editing on the page is faster and keeps the design intact. See how to edit a PDF without losing formatting for more on that choice.
Scanned PDFs
A scan is a picture of a page, so there is no text layer for Smart Replace to copy. You can still cover a mistake with Whiteout and type the right words on top. To make the whole scan editable, read how to edit a scanned PDF.
Privacy
Editing and the PDF download happen in your browser — your file is not uploaded. Only if you choose the Word download is the edited PDF sent to our server to convert, and it is deleted straight after.

Can I edit the existing text in a PDF for free?
Yes. In DocuSmartly Edit PDF, double-click the words: they open in a text box in the same size and colour so you can correct them. It is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser.
How do I edit a PDF without converting it to Word?
Edit it directly on the page: double-click the words to change them, add any new text with the Text tool, then download as PDF. The layout, fonts and images stay as they were.
How do I delete text from a PDF?
Double-click the line and delete the words, or draw a Whiteout box over them, then download the PDF. The covered words are taken out of the file, not just hidden. For private numbers, use Redact.
Can I change the font size of text in a PDF?
Yes for text you add: pick a size or drag a corner. For original text, whiteout it first; it comes back in a text box at its original size, which you can then resize.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. The editor works in mobile browsers. In Select mode, swipe to scroll and tap an item to move it.
